How to Prepare for the First Day of College

Classes are about to start for the semester and for new and returning students, the day can be daunting. Here are a few tips to have a great first day.

Read Your Syllabus

Many classes will release the syllabus in advance of the class so that students can start finding textbooks and understand class expectations better. Take the opportunity to read the syllabus in advance. This way you get your questions answered on the first day of class. Additionally, there will sometimes be big dates you may want to take off or you may find some where all your classes are canceled and you can schedule a dr appointment or something.

The final reason to check the syllabus is because it will sometimes let you know that you have an assignment due on the first day of class. Normally they aren’t too intense and act as ways for the professor to see where everyone in the class stands on a topic or get to know students better.

Pick Out Your Outfit

While it can be tempting to roll out of bed the first day of classes, dressing decent can be helpful. It gives professors a good first impression and can often make you stand out in the class. And, dressing in a nicer outfit can make you feel more confident and ready for the day.

Plan Your Route

If you’re a freshman, or just have a class in a new building and room, make sure to figure out how to get there. You don’t want to miss or be late to your first day of class. Make sure to check out the layout for the building if you can. Some building start off on the second floor or have all offices at the bottom, so knowing where the room is will help. Planning your route in advance also helps you figure out whether it may be worth it to bus or ride your bike to save you on time.

Plan A Good Breakfast

While some people may argue that breakfast isn’t that important, it can help you have a good day mentally. It can also help get you through any classes that run through lunch. Pick something with some protein to help your brain.

Pack Your Bag

Make sure that you charge your laptop/tablet and get it into your backpack the night before. Make sure you have a pencil and paper as well. It’s also important that you pack an umbrella or jacket if you think they’ll be inclement weather.

Be Mentally Prepared

Starting classes can be both exciting and stressful. Make sure that you’re mentally prepared for classes to start up. Understand that everyone struggles at some point during the school year (especially their freshman year) and that you can over come it.

Good luck to everyone on their first day of classes. I hope it’s great and you all get out early.
